![]() ![]() It is remembered as one of the most famous victories by an English club on foreign soil15 Nov 14 - 01:13
But behind the incredible story lies one of footballs biggest tragedies which spiralled from injury, despair, drugs and into death. Paul Vaessen was just 18 when he scored Arsenals winning goal in Turin in April 1980 to knock-out mighty Juventus from the European Cup Winners Cup. Londoner Vaessen was on every back page the following day. He was Arsenals hero, it was the first time Juventus had lost to a British side on home soil and he had scored past the legendary Dino Zoff. Vaessen didnt even play in the fifa 15 coins final - which Arsenal lost to Valencia on penalties - and that should have been a warning of the heartache to follow. He was forced to retire from football before he was 21, he became a virtual cripple because of a knee injury, became a drug addict and then died in August 2001 as he struggled to cope with the fear of losing his leg. The coroner recorded accidental death after a high level of drugs were found in his bloodstream. It is a modern day tragedy which has been affectionately been brought back to life as a warning of the incredible highs in football together with the depths of despair. A new book Stuck In A Moment: The Ballad of Paul Vaessen is a brilliant and cautionary tale which details how a young hero turned into an addict who struggled to cope with fame and died alone in his Bristol flat, aged 39. His mum Maureen, 72, has no doubt that he would be alive today had the injury happened now as the book includes a horrifying picture of how his knee was treated years ago. |
